INTRODUCTION
The writer meets, Jean, a retired music teacher from California, when she is conducting one of her Tours of the U.K.
Her son is nearly 20, her lover is dying, her husband is absent, and she needs a new occupation to replace both supply teaching and the job of escorting the Americans around Europe. She tries her hand at picking apples, "temping", private tutoring and counselling.
The story follows their friendship as it develops and is tested in England and abroad. Can they share a life together - will they finally want to - despite their wide differences of age and background, in a society which will be approving?
There are many journeyings and escapes; much soul-searching and agonizing. The story explores the special relationship between the two women who are 30 years apart in age, one retiring to a new country, and one searching for the courage to survive both identity and mid-life crises and the problems that exist in the mind, the families, and the community as they try to settle together.
There is great depression and great joy during the giant upheavals of moving house, continent and social role. The story contains poignancy, humour and philosophy as it plumbs the depths and tests the endurance of modern society.
